Front Door: Out With The Old, In With The Older

Following up with yesterday's post, here's a picture of my new door. I am going to have a stained-glass transom with my house number made to fill the gap above the door. You may notice there's no crosspiece between the top of the door and the plywood right now. I decided to hang the door before installing that so I could get the fit at close as possible and just haven't gotten around to it yet. Luckily it's been warm so I'm not getting in too much trouble with the gap, but I should be have that finished today or tomorrow.

And I'll be damned if I can't find a single picture of the old front door! I know I took a bunch of pictures of the house from the outside before I bought it but I can't seem to find them. The picture I put on my blog when I first bought the house has my realtor in the doorway so you can't see the door at all. But believe me... it was hideous.

Any thoughts on paint color? I have considered doing some kind of a crazy mount-pleasantish thing with lots of different colors accenting the profiles...

    Looks good, but I'm surprised you didn't put the security door/bars back on the door. We live in Columbia Heights, remember?

    I'm getting measured for a classy gate (e.g. with storms & screens) tomorrow morning. Hoping to recycle the old one for my other house if it fits.

    Though I do think that break-ins through the front are pretty uncommon these days - too visible. The only problem with that particular door, is that it's inviting for a thief to break a window and try the doorknob from the inside. It wouldn't work since the lock has an integrated deadbolt (assuming I remember to use it), but that's not obvious.

    But either way I want a gate with screens so I can leave the front door open (with gate locked) in the summertime.

    Yeah, that might be why it was missing a pane of glass in the first place.

    Mine has a storm door/gate, which looks better than bars, but not much. I'm hoping the neihborhood will improve enough that one day my house will look one of those in G'town. You know, without the bars at all.

    Yep, you nailed it - the left pane was broken at the bottom. Probably why the previous door-owner got rid of the damn thing!

    I too hope my house will look like one of those in Georgetown one day.. you know, with a $1.6 million dollar price tag.

    Now, how will it hold up if someone breaks through the window from the INSIDE and reaches through to try to let themselves out? That's what inquiring minds really want to know.
